UN envoy deeply concerned over Rambukkana shooting
UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy says she is "deeply concerned" by reports of harm to protestors in Rambukkana.
She stressed that violence by any party involved hinders the rights of all peaceful protestors.
The Resident Coordinator further said that restricting the use of force to the minimum extent necessary is necessary to protect citizens and their right to exercise fundamental freedoms.
Police fired tear gas last evening to disperse protestors who were blocking the level crossing in Rambukkana, killing an individual and critically injuring several others.
