Lawyers ask CJ to transfer case to Colombo CM’s Court
By Hansi Nanayakkara
The People’s Lawyers Organisation (PLO), yesterday submitted a petition to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, urging the Chief Justice to transfer the judicial hearing of the ongoing case against anti-Government protests, being staged opposite the Presidential Secretariat at Galle Face, from the Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate’s Court to the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The PLO in its letter to the CJ and the JSC has alleged that the Fort Police is attempting to coerce the Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate’s Court, to intervene in its bid to forcibly clamp down on the ongoing anti-Government protest, being staged at the aforesaid protest site.
The PLO has further pointed out, that though the Galle Face Green comes under the jurisdiction of the Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate’s Court its Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage, is known to maintain close links with powerful Government Ministers and MPs.
Hence, the PLO has observed in the letter to the CJ and the JSC that it will be foolhardy, to expect an impartial or unbiased verdict with regard to the ongoing case filed at the Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate’s Court.
