President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says the citizens' right to peacefully protest will not be hindered.
In a Twitter message, the Head of State said the police will carry out an impartial and transparent inquiry into the recent police shooting at Rambukkana.
President Rajapaksa said he is "deeply saddened" about the incident.
"I urge all citizens to refrain from violence as they protest."
